RICE RANCHGOOD THINGS, ROOTED IN CARE
A FREE RICE RANCH RESOURCE

The daily care checklist.

Five checks to help you notice what needs attention.

Walk a familiar route, look at what is in front of you and leave a short note for the next caregiver. Adapt the routine to the species, age, weather and care plan of your animals. This is a general planning aid; your veterinarian and local Extension office can help with individual needs.

  1. Water

Check that fresh water is reachable and containers are working. Look for empties, leaks, dirt or ice. Recheck when heat or freezing conditions change access.

  2. Feed

Use the feed and amounts in the animals’ established care plan. Look for wet, spoiled or moldy feed and protect stored feed from moisture and pests. Do not make sudden diet changes without appropriate advice.

  3. Shelter

Look for a dry resting area, appropriate ventilation and protection from the weather. Note wet bedding, damaged panels or blocked access. What works for one species or age may not work for another.

  4. Gates and boundaries

Check latches, obvious gaps and damage along the usual route. Secure a problem area before relying on it to contain animals. See our farm gate and fence checklist for a closer walk-through.

  5. Each animal

Take a moment to compare appetite, movement and behavior with what is usual for that animal. Write down a change and contact the appropriate caregiver or veterinarian when help is needed. A checklist cannot diagnose an illness.

Read a little deeper

General water, feed and shelter reminders were reviewed against Utah State University Extension’s backyard chicken basics and cold-weather horse care. These resources are species-specific; the gate checks and notes are Rice Ranch’s organizational suggestions.
